Forty-seven versions of the same PDF. Screenshots from 2023. A logo named “final-FINAL-v6.” You know the one.
You’ve been meaning to deal with it for a year. You’re not going to, and that’s fine… because you don’t have to. Today you let Cowork sort through the chaos instead of you.
Time: about 10 minutes to kick off. Then you go live your life.
What you need
- Claude Cowork open on your computer (it’s the version of Claude that can see your files, not the chat in the browser).
- Cowork pointed at your Downloads folder. If it can’t see it yet, it’ll tell you, and you pick the folder from there.
That’s it. No plugin, no setup, no spreadsheet.
The prompt
Copy this, paste it into Cowork, and hit enter.
I want you to help me clean up my Downloads folder (or point me to the folder you can see). First, look through it and show me what's in there — group it by type (PDFs, images, screenshots, docs, random installers, etc.) and flag the obvious junk: duplicates, old versions, screenshots I'll never need, files from years ago.
Then give me a simple plan:
- What to delete
- What to keep and where it should actually live
- Anything you're not sure about, ask me before touching it
Don't delete anything without showing me first. Once I approve, help me sort it.
What to look for
Cowork should show you the mess before it touches anything. That’s the whole point of the last two lines. You stay in control. It does the sorting.
A good first pass looks like this:
- A grouped inventory. PDFs here, images there, installers you ran once in 2024 in their own sad little pile.
- The obvious junk, flagged. Duplicates, old versions, the seventeen screenshots of the same error message.
- Questions, not assumptions. If it isn’t sure whether that contract PDF matters, it asks. If it deletes first and asks later, you gave it the wrong prompt (or skipped the last two lines).
Read the plan. Say yes to the parts you agree with, “leave that one” to the parts you don’t. Then let it work.
If it gets it wrong
Nothing here is permanent. Everything it moves can be moved back, and it isn’t allowed to delete anything you haven’t approved.
If it groups something weird, tell it. “Those aren’t screenshots, those are client photos, keep them together.” That’s literally all you have to say.
The bonus move
Once your downloads folder is clean, point it at your desktop. Or that one Drive folder you’re scared of. Same prompt, same move.
Why this works
You just handed Claude a job with clear rules: look first, show me, ask before you touch anything, then do the work. That’s the difference between AI that helps and AI that makes a mess.
It’s also a taste of what happens when Claude can see your business the way it can see this folder. Inside AI Skool of Business, we give it a place to live… your offers, your voice, your clients, your priorities… so every job after this one starts with it already knowing you. See how it works.
