Chat, Cowork, and Claude Code give you different ways to work with Claude. Dispatch connects your phone to work on your desktop. Here is how they fit together.
This guide gives you the plain-English map. Two questions will help you choose a starting point.
The one-line map
Claude is one brain. What changes is what’s around Claude in each mode.

The real dividing line
It’s not Chat vs Cowork vs Code, it’s conversation vs task handoff.
- Chat = you’re talking with Claude. Synchronous. You steer every step.
- Cowork + Code = you’re handing Claude a task. Claude works through the steps using the tools available to that session.
Two questions to choose a starting point
1. Am I talking, or handing off?
- Talking (ideas, drafts, questions) → Chat
- Handing off (do the thing) → Cowork or Code
2. What kind of work do I need done?
- Business documents, research, and connected workflows → Cowork
- Software, code, and development workflows → Code
Common misconceptions
- “Code is only for developers.” It is designed for development work, but can also help with file-based workflows. Choose it when its tools fit the task.
- “I have to pick one.” You can use more than one. Start with the one that fits the work in front of you.
- “Cowork is Chat with tools.” No. Cowork is agentic, it runs multi-step work autonomously. Different mode entirely.
The bigger point
If you’re building a file-based business brain (like the Living Business Brain), you’re not locked to any of these, the brain lives in a folder Claude Cowork can read, Claude Code can edit, and any other AI tool with filesystem access can use.
The useful part is the context you have written down. Keep that context organized and current, then give the tool you are using access to the files it needs.
A note about desktop tasks
Dispatch needs your computer awake and Claude Desktop open. Cloud sessions work differently. Check Claude’s current Dispatch guidance before relying on unattended work.
